Dodgers Highlights: Bobby Miller Shines, Caleb Ferguson’s Diving Catch & David Peralta’s Clutch Hit Against Diamondbacks

The Los Angeles Dodgers won five of six games on their road trip that was punctuated by shutting out the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-0, to complete a series sweep at Chase Field.

Bobby Miller bounced back from a short outing last week to pitch six-plus innings without allowing a run. It was Miller’s first scoreless start since holding the Philadelphia Phillies without a run over six innings on June 10 in his fourth career outing.

Miller stranded one baserunner in the first and second innings, and faced a bigger threat in the fourth as the Diamondbacks put two on with one out. He wiggled out of the jam and again in the fifth inning after a leadoff walk and double left two runners in scoring position with nobody out.

Miller later was aided by Caleb Ferguson making a terrific diving catch for the start of a double play in the seventh inning on Geraldo Perdomo’s sacrifice bunt attempt.

While Miller dazzled, his effort was matched by Merrill Kelly despite his career struggles against the Dodgers.

Kelly allowed six hits but also got through six-plus innings without giving up a run. Kelly’s night came to an end two pitches into the seventh inning because of a right leg cramp.

The game remained tied until Freddie Freeman’s two-out, ground-rule sparked a Dodgers rally in the eighth inning. Will Smith was intentionally walked and Max Muncy drew a free pass to load the bases. David Peralta remained in the game to face a lefty in Kyle Nelson, and gave the Dodgers a decided lead with his two-run single.

It was a second noteworthy highlight for Peralta in the series as he took a home run away on Tuesday night.

Dodgers pulling away in NL West standings

With the Dodgers off to an 8-1 start in August, they have begun to separate from the struggling San Francisco Giants and reeling Diamondbacks.

The Dodgers now have a six-game lead over the Giants for first place in the National League West and are 11 up on the Diamondbacks, who sat atop the division earlier this season.

San Francisco has lost four of their last five games, while Arizona is on an eight-game losing streak.
