The Los Angeles Dodgers are down another key contributor after Teoscar Hernández was removed from Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies due to a left hamstring strain.
Hernández suffered the injury while running to first base on a groundout in the bottom of the second inning. He walked slowly back to the dugout and was visibly frustrated before going into the clubhouse.
“Don’t know how severe it is,” manager Dave Roberts said after the Dodgers’ 4-1 win. “He tested well, but we’re going to get a scan tomorrow. Obviously it’s an IL, but there’s just no timeline.
“Something like that, obviously it’s going to be a few weeks at the minimum. Disappointing. He’s been playing so well and he’s a big part of what we’re doing, so to lose him for any length of time is not great.”
With Hernández heading to the 10-day injured list, the Dodgers are recalling Ryan Ward from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace him on the active roster, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Roberts hinted at the possibility after the Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of the Rockies.
“We’ll talk through it tonight,” Roberts said. “Wardo is on the (40-man) roster and he’s had a nice year. I think we’ll talk through it and make a decision. We have the off day to kind of decide.”
Ward made his MLB debut earlier this season when he temporarily joined the Dodgers while Freddie Freeman was on the paternity list. He went 2-for-6 with an RBI across two games.
Who will replace Teoscar Hernández in left field?
When Hernández was removed from Wednesday’s game against the Rockies, Hyeseong Kim entered to play left field for the first time in his young Major League career.
Kim and Ward figure to get occasional opportunities in left field while Hernández is out. However, Roberts revealed that Alex Call will receive the most playing time at the position.
“We’ll probably platoon Call and somebody else, but it’s not going to be a clear-cut platoon,” Roberts said. “I do see Alex getting more plate appearances.”
Call started the series finale against the Rockies in right field in order for Kyle Tucker to receive the night off.
