The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Charlie Barnes off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Tommy Edman was transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to make room for Barnes on their 40-man roster.
The left-hander was designated for assignment by the Cubs on May 6 as one of the corresponding moves to the team selecting the contract of Trent Thorton.
Barnes only appeared in one game for the Cubs, allow four runs (three earned) over three innings pitched back on April 13. Barnes was optioned to Triple-A Iowa the following day, returned to the Cubs roster on April 26 but was sent back to the Minors one day later.
Barnes made his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins in 2021, when he went 0-3 with a 5.92 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in nine games (eight starts). The 30-year-old was drafted by the Twins in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
Over six Minor League seasons, Barnes is 27-24 with a 3.86 ERA while primarily being utilized as a starting pitcher. Barnes was 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in seven games (four starts) for the Iowa Cubs this year.
Tommy Edman on 60-day IL
Edman started the season on the 10-day injured list due to his ongoing recovery from having right ankle surgery during the offseason. He was projected to return in late May, which isn’t impacted by now being on the 60-day injured list.
Though, recent comments by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts suggested Edman’s timetable was likely pushed back anyhow.
“Slow program for Tommy. Kind of some soreness, some residual soreness,” Roberts said earlier this week. “So we kind of backed him off a little bit. Nothing too alarming, but he’s just on a slower program.”
Roberts’ comments came just over one week after he revealed Edman previously dealt with soreness upon increasing the intensity of his running.
It’s not clear if Edman dealt with more ankle trouble upon trying to advance in his running program, or if his current status is an extension of Roberts’ prior remarks.
Regardless, Edman now is not eligible to be activated until May 24. Given he’s yet to so much as begin a rehab assignment, he likely wouldn’t have been with the Dodgers by that time anyhow.
