The Los Angeles Dodgers called up Jonathan Hernández and designated Wyatt Mills for assignment ahead of their series opener against the Chicago Cubs.
The move was part of multiple roster transactions the Dodgers made on Monday, which also included calling up Chuckie Robinson and placing Dalton Rushing on the 10-day injured list, and activating Tarik Skubal and optioning Emmet Sheehan.
Mills was recalled on Saturday when the Dodgers designated Cole Irvin for assignment. He pitched two innings on Sunday, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout and two walks.
The right-hander has thrown 6.1 innings this year with a 5.68 ERA and 2.21 WHIP while striking out five hitters. With the OKC Comets, Mills has pitched well, holding a 2.41 ERA in 37.1 innings.
It’s unlikely Mills will be claimed, and then he could stick around with the Dodgers organization in Triple-A. He is one of a few pitchers they have shuffled between the Major and Minor League levels this season.
Jonathan Hernández back with Dodgers
Hernández returns to the Dodgers for his second stint since first signing with them on May 18. He was designated for assignment on June 30, but opted to stay with the organization instead of going elsewhere.
He struggled in his first opportunity, pitching to an 8.15 ERA, 6.38 FIP and 1.76 WHIP over 12 appearances with the Dodgers.
Overall in Triple-A, he’s posted a 5.24 ERA in 22.1 innings.
He had a 4.80 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 13 appearances for Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia Phillies, Triple-A) before signing with the Dodgers. With the Oklahoma City Comets, Hernández had a 6.14 ERA in 7.1 innings.
Hernández doesn’t figure to be with the team for long, but he provides them with an arm capable of eating some innings when needed.
He is also someone they could easily designate for assignment when they need to clear room on the 40-man roster for some of their players currently on the 60-day injured list.
The 30-year-old has previous MLB experience with the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners. Hernández began the year with the Phillies organization but did not get a chance with them before opting out of his Minor League deal and becoming a free agent.
The right-hander last wore No. 29 with the Dodgers, but now that number is taken by Skubal. Hernández has switched to No. 26.
