The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to trail the San Francisco Giants in the National League West standings, but the club reached a bit of a milestone on Sunday with their 100th win of the season.
“You can’t get lost in the body of work and what we’ve done each year, the consistency,” manager Dave Roberts said of his club after they took the rubber match from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“Knowing ultimately the goal is to win a championship every year, you’ve still got to give yourself that chance. Looking at a long season, a lot to be said of the organization. Proud of it, you take a moment to enjoy it and relish it, and we in the baseball world just have a way of moving on.”
Thus far, the Giants (102 wins) and Dodgers are the only clubs to reach triple digits in victories this year. They figure to be joined by the Tampa Bay Rays at some point, and potentially the Milwaukee Brewers as well.
For the Dodgers, it’s a ninth time in franchise history, and third in the past five seasons with at least 100 wins. Should L.A. sweep remaining series against the San Diego Padres and Brewers, they would tie the franchise record of 106 wins, which the 2019 club holds.
The Dodgers getting to 100 victories this season is certainly notable when taking into account the rash of injuries they’ve had to overcome. Among other challenges, Corey Seager missed six weeks, Clayton Kershaw also was out for an extended period of time, and Dustin May underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery after just five starts.
In addition to reaching 100 wins, the Dodgers extended their postseason streak to nine consecutive years. However, their stretch of NL West titles could very well come to an end.
Seager reflects on Dodgers reaching 100 wins
The Dodgers earning a 3-0 victory against the Diamondbacks was largely built on the back of Corey Seager slugging two home runs. Trea Turner contributed with a solo shot as well, and both players reached 100 career home runs in the process.
As for the team’s accomplishment, Seager said, “We’ve had a lot of guys come through here and play really well for us, and we’ve had a really good core. To go out and compete, grind and play like that every year to win 100 games, it’s not easy.
“Going out there and competing, staying locked in, not giving away ABs, not giving in in August, not giving in when people get hurt, it’s a testament to those guys in that locker room.”
