Prior to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels playing to a tie at Tempe Diablo Stadium, manager Phil Nevin and his son Kyle Nevin were part of a memorable exchange of lineup cards in what otherwise is a mundane practice.

“I talked to Phil this past winter because Kyle was going to be in camp with us,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game.

“Knowing that he was in our camp, I just thought it would be a special moment for their family. They’re going to do a nice dinner, and he got his swings in. So that’s a moment they’ll always remember.”

After exchanging lineup cards and briefly speaking with umpires, the Nevins embraced one another and then went to their respective dugouts.

Kyle appeared as a pinch-hitter for Drew Avans in the ninth inning and struck out. The at-bat represented his first career Spring Training game.

Phil is entering his first season as Angels manager. He held the interim role after Joe Maddon was fired last season and signed a one-year contract in October to become the full-time skipper.

Dodgers drafting Kyle Nevin part of MLB legacies

The Dodgers selected Kyle Nevin with the 345th pick (13th round) in the 2022 MLB Draft. He hit .304 with 49 RBI in 54 games at Baylor University last season and reportedly received a $397,500 signing bonus.

Nevin was the first son of a former Major League taken by the team last year, as the Dodgers also drafted Jared Karros in the 16th round.

He of course is the son of Eric Karros, who enjoyed a successful career in L.A. and is a part-time Dodgers broadcaster for SportsNet LA.
