The Los Angeles Dodgers made multiple roster moves prior to the start of their homestand, including selecting the contract of Charlie Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioning Kyle Hurt. Also on Monday, the Dodgers recalled Seth Halvorsen and designated Jonathan Hernández for assignment.
Barnes and Halvorsen give the Dodgers two fresh arms for a bullpen that’s seen heavy usage of late. Meanwhile, Hurt is off the roster after getting recalled Aug. 1.
The right-hander is 3-1 with a 4.46 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 37.1 innings pitched across 37 games (one start) this season. During his time with the Comets this year, Hurt is 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA in nine appearances.
Hurt has been formally recalled twice this season, and he also was up with the Dodgers as their 27th player for one of the doubleheader games against the New York Yankees.
Hurt last pitched on Sunday, throwing a scoreless inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was the second of back-to-back appearances at Chase Field.
On Saturday night, Hurt was among a stable of Dodgers relief pitchers that achieved a rare MLB feat through a streak of stranding multiple baserunners.
Charlie Barnes chose Dodgers
Barnes is back up with the team just under two weeks from getting designated for assignment as the corresponding move to Edwin Díaz coming off the 60-day injured list. Barnes cleared waivers and chose to become a free agent, but immediately re-signed with the Dodgers on a Minor League contract at the start of the month.
Hernández getting DFA’d opened up a spot on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster that Barnes filled. He could be in line for a brief stay with the Dodgers as they expect to welcome back Blake Snell on Tuesday.
Barnes appeared in four games over three previous stints with the Dodgers, going 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. Barnes last pitched on July 26 in the series finale against the New York Mets.
The left-hander originally joined the Dodgers organization in early May when he was claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Barnes twice has been re-signed to a Minor League contract after getting DFA’d. The first instance came in the middle of July 11.
