Tyler Anderson was one of two Los Angeles Dodgers players extended the $19.65 million qualifying offer for the 2023 season. While he was considered a candidate to accept the one-year contract, the left-hander declined it in favor of signing a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels.
Anderson revealed he was tempted to take the qualifying offer with the Dodgers but ultimately preferred the security of a multi-year contract.
The 2022 All-Star put himself in position to sign a moderate deal after an impressive 2022 season with the Dodgers that saw him finish 15-5 with a 2.57 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across 30 games (28 starts).
Austin Barnes praised Anderson for the impact he had on the Dodgers and revealed his teammates will miss him next season but are happy for the left-hander on an individual level, via SportsNet LA:
“T.A. was great, man. Real sad when he went to the Angels, but really happy for him at the same time in getting that contract. He was just a good teammate. He showed up every day, worked really, really hard, and he ate up innings. He went out there and got outs. I don’t think he got caught up in strikeouts. He got caught up in putting us in position to win a game. He took the ball a lot and had a career year. It was really, really exciting to see all that pay off. We played against him for so long we really didn’t know who he was as a teammate or anything like that. He’ll be missed, for sure.”
Anderson signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Dodgers during Spring Training and began in the bullpen before being needed in the starting rotation because of an Andrew Heaney injury. He made just two appearances as a piggyback to Tony Gonsolin before taking hold of a starting job.
With the Angels, Anderson rounds out their five-man starting rotation as they explore the potential of needing six pitchers to account for Shohei Ohtani being on the mound and a designated hitter.
Dodgers compensation for Tyler Anderson
Because Anderson rejected the qualifying offer from the Dodgers, they will receive a compensation pick after the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
They could receive another draft pick if Trea Turner rejects the qualifying offer and joins a different team as well.
