The Houston Astros have hired former Los Angeles Dodgers director of quantitative analysis Scott Powers to be one of their new assistant general managers. Powers joins Andrew Ball, who was also just hired by the organization, and Pete Putila as the Astros’ three assistant general managers.

For the past three seasons, Powers assisted in player evaluation, player development and in-game strategy as the for the Dodgers.

With the Astros, Powers will focus on research and development, performance science, and other departments within the Astros’ analysis system. Powers was one of many hires Houston made for their front office and player development system, along with Sara Goodrum and Ball.

“The additions of Andrew, Scott, Sara and others, combined with the expanded roles and responsibilities of many of our current staff are exciting changes for the Astros that will enable us to continue to be at the forefront of all areas of Baseball Operations,” Astros general manager James Click said in a statement.

“We’re excited to add their fresh perspectives and to see our staff continue to evolve as we strive for long-term, sustained success at all levels of the Astros organization.”

Powers had been with the Dodgers for five seasons, originally joining the organization as a senior analyst of research and development in 2017, before being promoted to director of quantitative analysis at the end of the 2018 season.

He also worked as an analytics consultant for the Oakland Athletics from 2015-2016.

Powers received his doctorate in statistics from Stanford University in 2017, his masters’ in statistics from the University of Chicago in 2013 and his bachelor’s in mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011.

Dodgers success comes from working as collective group

Although the Dodgers have continuously lost coaches and executives to different organizations over the past several years, they have yet to let it affect them on the field.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman believes they are able to withstand all the departures because of how well each part of their organization is synced together.
