Tony Wolters helped serve as organizational catching depth since signing a Minor League contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in August 2021, and this past season saw him receive an opportunity back up in the Majors.

Wolters was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City in August of this year as a corresponding move to the Dodgers putting Austin Barnes on the family emergency list. Prior to that point, Wolters had last been in the Majors with the Chicago Cubs during the 2021 season.

While up with the Dodgers, he appeared in two games (one start) during a weekend road series against the Kansas City Royals. Wolters went a combined 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in those games.

When Barnes returned from leave, the Dodgers designated Wolters for assignment. He was released from the organization but re-signed with the Dodgers shortly after on another Minor League deal and was assigned to Oklahoma City.

The Vista, California native batted .230/.321/.284 with nine doubles and 29 RBI over 61 games with the OKC Dodgers this past season.

He is among the current group of Dodgers Minor League free agents and is playing for the Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League.

Tony Wolters 2022 highlight

During a June 3 road game against the Round Rock Express, Wolters went 3-for-3 and set a season high with three RBI in Oklahoma City’s 10-4 win.

He later tied that amount during a 3-for-5 effort in September to help lead OKC in a historic 20-5 home victory over the Tacoma Rainiers.

2023 outlook

Wolters figures to eventually sign with a team — presumably receiving a Minor League contract. That conceivably could come with the Dodgers, who have a catching need in OKC.

Wolters made his MLB debut with the Colorado Rockies and appeared in 391 games with the team from 2016-2020. The Rockies non-tendered Wolters after the 2020 season and he became a free agent.
