As the world continues to grapple with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced that its induction weekend, scheduled for July 24-27, has been cancelled.

Among those that would have been honored include Derek Jeter and Larry Walker, who were each elected as part of the 2020 class in January. They joined Marvin Miller and Ted Simmons, who were previously voted in by the Today’s Game Era ballot this past December.

The quartet will now be recognized on Sunday, July 25, 2021, in Cooperstown, along with any new members that are elected as part of the 2021 class. It’s the first time since 1960 in which a ceremony won’t take place.

Next year’s festivities will mark the first time since 1949 in which multiple classes are inducted together. This has only happened on a handful of occasions, including 1939, when the 1936-39 Hall of Fame classes were enshrined on June 12 — the day of the Museum’s formal opening.

Others slated to be honored next summer include 2020 J.G. Taylor Spink Award winner Nick Cafardo, 2020 Ford C. Frick Award winner Hawk Harrelson and the recipient of the 2020 Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award, David Montgomery.

The aforementioned names will be celebrated on Saturday, July 24, 2021, as part of The Awards Presentation.

The cancellation of the 2020 induction weekend comes on the heels of the National Baseball Hall of Fame nixing this year’s Classic Weekend events.

Scheduled for May 22-24, the events that will no longer take place include the annual Legends Game, Night at the Museum program and BASE Race charity runs. Fans who purchased tickets to these events will receive a refund.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which has been closed to the public since March 15, remains shut down until further notice.

Updated information regarding this closure is being provided every Sunday at noon ET at baseballhall.org and via the Hall of Fame’s social media channels.
